You have to hand it to Ben Ryan and his Sevens team, they were the trendsetters when it came to kit unique to the game of Rugby Sevens.
First to unveil their so-called ‘tequila sunrise‘ jerseys (below), the England team was soon followed by other teams on the HSBC Sevens World Series circuit who came up with their own unique outfits.
Who can forget our own Blitzbokke’s failed attempt at the now infamous nappy-shorts.
Tokyo Champions Australia these days sport a lime-green strip manufactured by the world’s first dedicated Sevens Rugby kit manufacturers Seviin. The bright green kit is also a drastically departure from the traditional Aussie jersey in an attempt to forge a new and exciting identity for the Sevens game down under.
Ahead of their home tournament at London’s Twickenham, England Sevens recently unveiled yet another revolutionary strip, again moving away from their traditional white jersey.
According to the RFU website, the new purple-coloured jersey will be worn during ‘away matches‘ while the traditional white jersey will be reserved for ‘home matches.’
England Sevens star Chris Cracknell and Women’s Sevens captain Michaela Staniford last week took to the Twickenham Stadium roof to unveil the new England kit which will feature at the Marriott London Sevens.
Said Cracknell: ”The London Sevens is the event that the boys really look forward to as the atmosphere and home support is always amazing. The new kit is equally as crazy as the last design and I’m sure will be just as popular with the fans. I’m looking forward to seeing it around the stadium when we run out in a few weeks.”
Following the England kit launch, rugby pundit Jed Thian had this to say on FaceBook: “Overnight in Twickenham all traffic cones had the reflective tape peeled off to unveil new England Sevens strip.”
Hey Jedi, maybe England foresees the introduction of day-night matches?!
