Francis Henry Horne, affectionately known as Frankie, played his first Sevens World Series tournament back in the sands of Dubai in 2007. That was the ‘old’ Dubai… before the lush green, state-of-the-art facilities of The Sevens that the desert city boasts with nowadays.
Moving with the time and the current craze in South Africa, we must add that Dubai’s The Sevens even played host to teenage sensation Justin Bieber, who performed in Cape Town last night.
But, we digress.
In Frankie’s debut year, the BlitzBokke only managed to reach the Cup Semi-finals where they lost to, who else but… New Zealand (12 – 7). Since then Frankie has seen many a Cup semi-final and more particularly… a Cup Final that led to a tournament title. For perspective, it must be said that Horne has also seen his fair share of Plate and Bowl action as well.
In addition to that legendary year when the Springboks won their first Series title, this season must rank right up there for The Tank. Despite their 2nd place on the overall Series log so far, South Africa is the only team to have won three titles this season. As an extra cherry-on-the-top… all three titles were acquired against arch-nemesis New Zealand’s All Blacks Sevens.
Yes, Frankie Horne has been there and he’s seen it all.
This weekend the BlitzBokke’s skipper (in the absence of Kyle Brown) will be playing in his 50th consecutive HSBC Sevens World Series tournament.
We alerted the fans on our FaceBook and Twitter pages and will be posting some of their messages below.
Thank you for all you have been and are doing for South African Sevens, Tank.
We made this video for Frankie on his 29th birthday last year.
