Ex-Bok in stable condition after attempted hijacking
Several thugs forced Hannes Strydom off the road in Waterkloof by smashing a brick through his car window.
JOHANNESBURG – Former Springbok rugby lock Hannes Strydom has been transferred from an intensive care unit to a general ward following an attempted hijacking.
Several thugs forced Strydom off the road in Waterkloof yesterday by smashing a brick through his car window.
The former Lions Currie Cup player was part of the Springbok team that won the World Ciup in 1995.
The former Bok says three men flagged him down and the next thing, his vehicle was surrounded by six would-be hijackers and he was attacked.
He said he is injured but assured Eyewitness News he is alive and kicking.
“I sustained a head injury and have a scar on my back.”
Strydom drove himself to the nearest hospital where it was found he had fractured his skull from his eye socket to his jawbone and was admitted to the intensive care unit where he remains in a stable condition.
The police are investigating the matter.
At the same time, president of the South African Rugby Union (Saru) Regan Hoskins has sent rugby’s best wishes to the former Bok.
“This is very shocking news and I am sure the whole of the rugby community will join me in wishing Hannes a speedy recovery. He is part of a special group of players in South African rugby history and an attack on one of them feels like an attack on all of us.
The Saru president added that Strydom is in their thoughts and prayers.
