Rugby news from Western Province:

No complacency for unbeaten DHL WP:

Defending champions DHL Western Province might have won all six of their games in the Currie Cup this season with bonus points, but they will certainly not be taking anything for granted heading into the play-offs.

Their 34-7 victory against Vodacom Blue Bulls in a game shortened to just 40 minutes due to extreme weather conditions at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday made it six bonus-point wins out of six matches in the league phase of the Currie Cup.

That result saw them top the standings and secure home advantage in the knock-out phase of the competition, with the Vodacom Blue Bulls travelling down to Cape Town for a semifinal at DHL Newlands, which will kick off at 17h00 on Saturday, October 20.

Head Coach John Dobson was pleased with the compusure his team showed in difficult conditions in Pretoria, but made it clear that they will have to be as sharp as ever to book a home final at DHL Newlands.

“We are absolutely thrilled, I think the players responded incredibly well.

“It was unusual to be in the position where we had to win the game or score four tries within one half.

“This is a special group and they are definitely not going to be complacent, but we are also completely aware that those conditions favoured us. First of all because of our experience of them and secondly because some of the Blue Bulls players made wet weather mistakes. It is not going to be as easy next week,” he said.
