The Fidelity Security Premier Division league couldn’t have entered into a more exciting finale as the clubs go into the last round of the competition this Saturday. What makes it more intriguing is the fact that the outcome of both the Top Five and the Bottom Five will be determined in the last round this weekend.
Front runners Your Communications College Rovers remain the only unbeaten side in the league as they prepare to go head to head with the 2015 champions SA Home Loans Durban Collegians in their last game of the competition on Saturday. All eyes were on the game in Amanzimtoti, with Collegians facing the South Coast Terriers, who are placed third on the log, last Saturday and it was the visitors who came away with a convincing enough win, beating Toti 39-3, which was just what the doctor ordered as they get ready to meet their neighbours on their home grounds, KP 10, this Saturday.
Amanzimtoti were hoping for a much better outcome but after trailing 15-3 at the break it was Collegians that really looked the part, crossing for six tries and must now surely be odds on favourites to retain the coveted Moor Cup the oldest piece of silverware in World Rugby.
Rovers who had a bye this last weekend will really need to lift their game should they want to reclaim the cup and an enthralling game is the cards. The curtain raiser between the two second stringer sides will also be a humdinger with Durban Collegians the only unbeaten side and should by all accounts wrap up the Wylie Cup in fine style for them, even though dropping a valuable log point against Toti.
Durban Collegians scored their tries through Shane Ball, Sipho Mkhize, Ngoni Chubuwe, Greg Bauer, Jasper Genis and Mondi Nkosi who also slotted a penalty and three conversions for 14 points of his own.
The proceedings at Collegians kick off at 2pm this Saturday as the final curtain comes down on the 2016 Premier Division league competition.
The outcome in the Bottom Five will also be finalised this coming weekend with PhotoNote Crusaders and Fidelity Security Jaguars vying for top spot, a mere three log points separating the two clubs. Jaguars beat Mancosa Zululand Rhinos edging out the side from Empangeni 26-21 while Crusaders had a bye.
So for Jaguars who travel to Newcastle and Saders who will be hosted by South Coast Warriors in Port Shepstone, it’s all to play for this weekend. South Coast Warriors will undoubtedly not be an easy side to handle especially on their home turf and after beating Newcastle 31-10, Saders will have their work cut out, not that it’s any easier travelling to Newcastle.
In the First , Hillcrest beat Richards Bay 22-15 finishing joint top of the log but missed out by a measly two points to take the league with the club from Zululand finishing up winners of the South Section. They will now meet the winners of the North Section, Vryheid on a home and away basis with Vryheid travelling to the coast to meet the boys from the bay this weekend to contest in the first of the two playoffs.
