First Glasgow Warriors Awards winners revealed

The first three winners of the 2019/20 Glasgow Warriors awards have been announced, with two club centurions and a teenage sensation being recognised for their performances so far this season.

The club’s record-holder for appearances Rob Harley received the 2019/20 The Famous Grouse Coaches Award, the flanker’s impact on and off the pitch being recognised by the Glasgow Warriors coaching team.

The 30-year-old has played in all bar one of Glasgow’s matches over the course of the campaign so far, playing over 1,100 minutes of rugby across the Guinness PRO14 and Heineken Champions Cup.

Already the only player in club history to make over 200 appearances for the club, Harley became only the second Warrior to reach 50 European appearances for the club earlier this year.

His work-rate and leadership were praised by former Glasgow Warriors Head Coach Dave Rennie, who also highlighted his work off the field.

“Rob is the complete club man,” said Rennie.

“His intelligence, huge work ethic and durability makes him one of the most valuable players I’ve ever coached.

“Off-field, he’s just as committed – he runs our charity committee alongside Chris Fusaro, and he’s a top role model for all young players.”

Club co-captain Ryan Wilson was another to be honoured on the first night of the 2019/20 Awards, which are being held across the Glasgow Warriors social media channels.

The Scotland back-rower was recognised with the Al Kellock Leadership Award, sponsored by Malcolm Group, after his barnstorming displays across the campaign.

Since returning from the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan Wilson has been an ever-present in the Glasgow matchday 23, making 14 appearances to date.

Wilson was recognised for his leadership both on and off the park, with the coaches highlighting his pride, passion and work off the pitch, driving culture and integrating new squad members.

There was also recognition for the youngest member of the 2019/20 Glasgow Warriors squad, as Jamie Dobie was named as the Land Rover Young Player of the Season.

The teenage scrum-half, who turns 19 this weekend, has made an instant impact in his debut season as a professional having joined the club straight from school.

Born in Inverness, he was rewarded for an impressive first start for the club with the man-of-the-match award in February’s victory over the Dragons at Scotstoun.

The 2019/20 Awards continue all this week, culminating in the reveal of the McCrea Financial Services Player of the Season on Saturday 6 June.
